Thanks to those who responded to the request for help converting graphics to shapefiles in 8.1. I received two responses that pointed to the same solution. Original request: GIS wizards, I have a friend with ArcView 8.1 who has had some major problems with editing shapefiles over his network, he keeps getting an error message that he does not have access to the files. (All are read/write access, even logged in as God's network admin he can't access them) ESRI tech support is on the case, but no resolution yet. As a new user, he decided to just draw features as graphics in the data view for the time being and try to convert to shapefiles later. Later is here and there does not seem to be an easy way to convert the graphic features to shapefile features. In 3.2 you could select features, start editing the shapefile, and paste the graphics into the shapefile. Is there a corresponding feature in 8.1? I have tried several things here trying to help him and can't seem to make it work. I even tried to select and copy the graphics from ArcMap then paste into 3.2. No luck. I posted this question to the ArcView list serve and got one response sharing a smilar story, but with no suggested remedy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The second email gives very good detailed instructions on how to install the dll on the ArcMap editor toolbar. -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Barrette [mailto:JBarrette@ESRI.com] Sent: Monday, July 02, 2001 2:00 PM To: 'Mary Heim'; Central Puget Sound GIS Users Subject: RE: ArcView 8.1 graphics to shapefile? Mary: A new developer sample has been added to ArcObjects Online that enables you to now convert a graphic into a feature within a layer. Please visit http://arconline.esri.com/arcobjectsonline/ an search on "Convert Graphics Command" Jeff -----Original Message----- From: Harpster, Jubal [mailto:JHarpster@ci.bellevue.wa.us] Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2001 10:43 AM To: 'maryheim@insightgis.com' Subject: RE: ArcView 8.1 graphics to shapefile? Mary, Here is a really easy way to do it. I found this from the samples site of ArcObjects Online. The attached Zip file contains the VB source but all you really need is the .DLL that goes along with it. Here are the instructions to get it to work. You will have to start an edit session for the target layer, so if thats not working right then you may still have trouble. But its worth a try. 1. browse and select the GraphicsToFeatures.dll using the 'Add From File' button on the Customize dialog. 2. From the 'Developer Samples' commands category, add 'Graphics to Features' to the Editor toolbar. 3. Start an edit session and add some graphics using the tools from the Draw toolbar. 4. Select some graphic elements. 5. Choose a target layer that matches the geometry of your selected graphic elements. 6. Click the command button. Hope that helps. -Jubal Harpster Lead GIS analyst City of Bellevue
